Upcoming Changes to Genre and Tagging on SoundCloud
SoundCloud wanted to let you know about a few upcoming changes to the way genres and tagging work on the site. Since launching charts, they have received many questions about how to properly label your music for it to populate in charts and stations. Soundcloud decided to adjust the way genre and tags work not only improve the charts, but improve searching ability for users site wide.
Upon upload:
- Genre and tags are no longer required for entry. The logic behind this is to reduce the amount of ‘noise’ in classification of songs, allowing only tracks that are specifically identified in a genre to populate in our ecosystem that way.
- Genre has it’s own drop down field.
- Genre is still allowed to be custom for upcoming new styles, and allowing people to express what they want to be identified as.
- Tags have been separated from the genre in order to allow you to put other contextual information alongside the song
Please see the graphic below to demonstrate how this will work for users when uploading content.
