DJ QBert, known for his turntablist innovations, has built a Bluetooth DJ controller into the album packaging for his new double LP, Extraterrestria and Galaxxxian. Partnering with Algoriddim’s DJay app and Novalia‘s “capacitive touch technology collaboration,” QBert’s team developed “the world’s first interactive album packaging” (perhaps interactive needs to be defined more clearly), creating a gatefold cover that doubles as a working DJ controller.

‘The controller is a simple paper album insert designed like a traditional DJ set-up, equipped with buttons, platters and crossfader. The controller syncs with mixing app Djay, letting listeners scratch, mix and play effects over QBert’s new double LP, or whatever else they choose to load into the app, as seen in the video below.

The controller will be included in both the vinyl and CD formats, but the release won’t be readily available to the public; the LP was funded last year via Kickstarter, and the interactive packaging will be available only to Kickstarter backers.

The campaign, which set out with a goal of $100,000, received much more than expected. A total of $128,378 was pledged by 971 backers, who received everything from a digital download and “BIG high-five,” to signed picture disc vinyl deluxe packages, signed prints, exclusive listening parties, signed Vestax mixers, “skratch” feature by QBert and an associate producer credit on the album. For more info, click here.
